Holdenhurst won what looked to be a poor race at Brigthon and then comprehensively outpaced when heading to Epsom for the Woodcote Stakes. Kirk's gelding was hampered at the start but very unlikely to have figured.
Cruel Clever Cat cost just £600 at the yearling sales. She started her career in the Brocklesby Stakes, which resulted in a respectable 5th. She ran in a pretty stiff race next start at Windsor when 7th behind Yogi's Girl. Gallagher kept her off course for a couple of months which may indicate an injury, issue or just giving this bay time to strengthen up. The trainer has done better with his juveniles this season and a step up in distance looks a good move.
*Time For Wine was given an entry for Royal Ascot, which may have been a fanciful idea, free owner's and trainer's badge or that this daughter of Equiano has ability. She made her debut at Windsor but didn't get a very good start that day, running wide for most, and showed some promise in the closing stages giving the impression this extra furlong will suit.
Summary: Not the easiest race to assess. Holdenhurst looks limited but shown winning ability, which is more than these. Cruel Clever Cat and Time For Wine have potential although tricky to assess. Time For Wine has fair win and place claims on a statistical front if priced 13/2 & less SP. To be honest, this looks a confusing race.
I will make an update at 11 AM (Tuesday) after further consideration.
